Key points for operating Paternosters & Rollmasters
-
Staff will have a key to
operate machine - do not leave key in machine if it is unattended. A timer
switch is available - read
more.
-
Check under
machine for any obstacles before operating - some staff have a habit of
pushing pallets, or trolleys etc under the machine
-
Push up button first - machine
front goes up. This is to push out a trolley if has been left under and not
noticed - run for say at least 1m, then can reverse direction if the wanted
roll is quicker to get that way.
-
Loading and unloading - do not
swing one end of roll/bar out at an angle - unclip each end moving roll out
a few inches and take roll out parallel to machine - doing it incorrectly (ie
swinging out an end) is main case of carrier pin failure. If pins are
noticeably twisted etc then they must be replaced.

-
Loading – Use one (for 2m wide
product) or two (for 4m wide product) trolleys to support the roll. Take
empty bar off machine and push it through the core of the roll(s). Push
load in to place. Lift each end of bar in turn & place in carrier pin. If
pin is positioned properly, you shouldn’t need to lift the roll at all –
only the pipe.
-
Make sure retainer clip on the
carrier pin cup is properly in place over top of spigot on end of carrier
bar. If clip is not in place the carrier can pop out as it goes over the
top or bottom of the machine if the rolls bunch up
-
Proper roll spacing and even
loading is important - vinyl rolls are heavy so there is a big difference
between the weight of full and near empty rolls.
-
Make sure all rolls are
strapped up and that rolls are not floppy - i.e. unwound loosely. Stray
ends can get caught and a whole roll will unwind. Synthetic grass is
particularly important to keep strapped up if it is on the machine as it
tends to telescope and expand if not strapped tightly. Unstrapped, it will
unwind VERY quickly.
-
Operators should read and
understand full operating
instructions which are also at the store. The
general operational
risk assessment should also be regularly reviewed and adapted to each
particular machine installation.
Generally it is common sense - operator
should keep eyes and ears open on machine when using to catch any problems
before they get too big.
